NAACP Affiliation: Augustin Edward Berch
Augustin Edward Berch became affiliated with the Cincinnati branch of the NAACP in June of 1963. He was enthused to become a member because of the foundation of the NAACP, (which was a response to the violent lynchings happening in America in the early 1900's) but also because of: The racist practices that barred African Americans from journeyman/entrepreneurship jobs and participation in the union controlled apprenticeship training programs in the building of trades industry. ( http://nkaa.uky.edu/subject.php?sub_id=10) There were only 100 African Americans that had been accessed into the apprenticeship in the U.S and Berch was one of them. He retired in 1977 as the intake supervisor for the Cincinnati branch of the apprenticeship center.
Note: Apprenticeship Centers were places that individuals sought out to learn a specific craft and earn an opportunity for hands-on work provided from the experience.
