Birch graduated from Kentucky State University and was the Director of The Cincinnati Apprenticeship Information center in 1969 when it was 1 of 35 centers in the United States. Birch also had roots in music, and was a notable tenor soloist in Frankfort. He also was apart of the Kentucky state university choir. Berch became a member of the Kentucky State Alumni Association, and served as a chair member of the scholarship committee. He was also a member of the profound Tuskegee airmen where he serviced with the military from 1943 until 1968.
